What “no income tax” means
These states do not tax wages and salaries. That does not mean residents pay no state taxes. Many of these states rely more on sales tax, property tax or other taxes. Some also tax other types of income. Washington, for example, taxes certain long-term capital gains.
Recent changes in New Hampshire and Tennessee
New Hampshire and Tennessee both used to tax interest and dividends. Tennessee’s tax ended in 2021. New Hampshire’s tax ended after 2024. Neither state taxes wages.
States with the highest income tax rates
California has the highest top marginal rate at 13.3% for 2026. Hawaii follows at 11%, New York at 10.9% and New Jersey at 10.75%. Many states apply the top rate only above a high income threshold.
Things to consider before you move
